What is Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was developed in China thousands of years ago. TCM focuses on strengthening the body’s defenses while enhancing its capacity for healing and maintaining health.
Traditional Chinese Medicine encompasses how we interact with all aspects of life and the environment. It takes into account such variables as seasons and weather, time of day and our diet and emotional state. The key to optimal health is the balanced functioning of the body, mind and spirit. This balance is dependent upon the unobstructed flow of qi, or life energy. Qi travels along pathways known as meridians. Disruptions in circulation of qi along these channels results in disease.

How does TCM work?
Traditional Chinese Medicine supports the body’s healthy energy and re-establishes the body’s balance and harmony.
The most common methods of TCM used in North America are acupuncture and moxibustion. They each regulate the body’s flow of blood and qi either by inserting hair-thin needles or warming specific acupoints. Chinese medicine practitioners also use Tui Na – a style of Chinese massage – and may also prescribe remedial or preventive exercises as part of an integrated lifestyle and diet counseling.
When should TCM be used?
Traditional Chinese Medicine is a complete medical system that can be used to treat a range of diseases, acute and chronic, traumatic, infectious, and internally generated. On the occasion that a disease is particularly far advanced, TCM alone may not be powerful or fast enough.
